Frequently asked questions about Mirrorless Cameras
Navigating the world of mirrorless cameras can be complex so we've assembled answers to common queries about our mirrorless range, providing insights for everyone from seasoned users to beginners. Explore our resources and build your understanding of mirrorless technology.
  • What is a mirrorless camera?

Mirrorless cameras don’t contain a system of mirrors which can be found within DSLR cameras, meaning a smaller and lighter camera that doesn’t compromise on image quality.
  • Can you compare mirrorless and DSLR cameras?

A DSLR camera uses a mirror and optical viewfinder (OVF) to allow photographers to frame and compose their shots through the camera’s lens seeing it directly as it is. Whereas Mirrorless cameras, as the name suggests, do not have a mirror mechanism and rely on an electronic viewfinder (EVF) to provide a digital preview.

  • What is good about mirrorless cameras?

Mirrorless cameras, due to their design are often more compact and lightweight than a DSLR. They also have fast and reliable autofocus, silent shooting and great low light performance. Some mirrorless cameras have In Body Image Stabilisation which compensates for camera shake and allows for smoother handheld shots.
  • What lenses can I use on Canon mirrorless cameras?

RF and RF-S lenses can be used on all EOS R series cameras. EF and EF-S lenses can also be used on EOS R series cameras with an EF-EOS R adapter allowing you to leverage existing lenses in your collection if you are transitioning from Canon DSLR to mirrorless.
  • Do you need image stabilisation in a mirrorless camera?

Our EOS R3, EOS R5, EOS R6 Mark II and EOS R7 have In Body Image Stabilisation (IBIS) which compensates for camera shake and allows for smoother handheld shots. This is especially valuable for low light photography, shooting at slower shutter speeds or at longer focal lengths. While it is valuable in many situations, it depends on your photography style and personal preference. Keep in mind, using an RF lens with Optical In Lens Image Stabilisation, still offers some compensation for shake even with cameras without IBIS.
  • Are mirrorless cameras better for video?

Mirrorless cameras offer 4K recording or even high resolutions allowing for greater detail and flexibility in post-production. They also offer high frame rate recording allowing you to add slow motion to your videos. Other benefits such as reliable autofocus, and image stabilisation within some models, make mirrorless cameras an excellent choice for video.
  • Are mirrorless cameras full frame?

Mirrorless cameras are available in both full frame and APS-C crop sensor sizes. Check out our EOS R series in full to find the right kit for you and explore both our full-frame and crop-sensor mirrorless cameras.
